House #2 Groundbreaking

News Flash

Family Selected for Habitat House

Local Recycling Project

New homes will be built, or deteriorated houses will be restored, in Alliance and Hemingford.  The second house was completed and dedicated in May 2009.

Groundbreaking for the third house took place July 22, 2009.  The house is being built at 1407 Big Horn Avenue, Alliance.  This home will be designed to match the needs of the selected family.

The organization will need to raise  between $45,000 and $55,000 to cover the cost of materials.  The home will be constructed through a partnership between volunteers and the selected family, and will be sold to that family at no profit and no interest.

The median household income in Box Butte County is $54,000 per year.  According to guidelines, households earning between 25% and 50% of that median meet the income eligibility requirements for a Habitat home.  This means households of four earning between $13,500 and $27,000 per year are in the approximate range for eligibility.  Overtime, bonuses, etc. are excluded when considering income.  Guidelines leave room for variances based on family size, extraordinary expenses, food stamps and other assistance, etc.

In general, a household is considered to be in poverty if it earns less than 50% of the median for a community.  In Box Butte County, that encompasses 1200 households.
